Press release / A JEW, A MUSLIM, AND A CHRISTIAN WALK INTO A GALLERY...
Bezalel Yaffo 23 / curated by Roy Brand and Sagit Mezamer / Jerusalem

Bezalel, Yaffo 23 is happy to host the new work of Berlin-based artist, Larissa Aharoni. Dozens of colorful pillows, stitched
with jokes about the three monotheistic religions, will turn the gallery space into a game room or a social - political - religious
therapeutic space. The war of religion turns into a pillow fight, and the giant “pills of humor” become the ammunition.

The jokes, following in the richness of human oral tradition, were gathered from around Jerusalem, from the web, and during
an art workshop held in December 2012 with students from the Bezalel Art Department as well as from students at the
Arab American University in Jenin (Westbank), which Larissa visited in January 2013 as part of the preparation for the project.
This exhibition, marks the third project at Bezalel / Yaffo 23, to follow our commissioned projects model which combines
workshop, action, and installation.

Larissa Aharoni continues the conceptual movement of Art and Language. She treats language as a concrete yet sensual
object. In her sculptures and installations, language creates a living environment that encourages some actions while
preventing others. With the current project, humor is shown to be one of the most significant tools in examining fixed norms
by striving to undermine them.

Aharoni (Berlin) is a graduate of BA and MA from the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf (2005). Between (2008-2010) she was
a guest artist in Bezalel's Masters program. In recent years, she has produced numerous solo exhibitions in Europe and the
U.S. She is among the founders of UBERBAU, an independent art space that operated from 2000 to 2006 in Düsseldorf.

Yaffo 23 is a center for research, creation and exhibition of contemporary art and culture in the center of Jerusalem, founded
by Bezalel Academy. Yaffo 23 operates as a non-profit organization aiming to promote independent and meaningful creation.

The project is supported by:
